National Promotion Committee Minutes, December 2019

Venue: Hampton Inn Tropicana, Las Vegas, Nevada, 12/14/19

1. Meeting called to order by Chairman Nishioka at 4:00.

2. Moment of silence for those who have passed since our last meeting.

3. Members Present: Cal Kitaura — Central Coast, Kuniko Takeuchi — Daiheigan, Shintaro Hig — Hudson, Mac Takeda — Hokka, Hayward Nishioka — Nanka, Janet Johnson — Niagara, Bill Caldwell — Pacific Southwest, Mike Purcell — Northwest, Miki Takemori — Shufu, Tom Sheehan — Konan.

4. Observer: Unknown. I apologize for this but I seem to have lost the sign-in sheets.

5. Remarks from the Chair: We need to keep up on the retention of our members and have incentives for being a USJF Member.

6. Motion: To pass the previous minutes after the corrections of spelling on Miki Takemori name. Motion passed.

7. Motion: A Shodan as young as 14 yrs of age must be able to qualify and play as a Senior level competitor. Motion passed.

8. Motion: To accept the Senior guideline requirements from the Ad-hoc committee report. Motion passed.

9. Motion: Recommend to the BoE that they approve and pass the Senior guideline requirement Ad-Hoc committee report. Motion passed.

10. Motion:

    To be added to the promotion recommendations for the rank of Rokudan:

      Demonstrative moral character and skills such as:

      • Sharing of an historical and philosophic perspective of Judo
      • Increased expertise in one or more areas
      • Leadership in the dojo, Yudanshakai, USJF, and the community
      • Recognition by one’s peers
      • Direct participation in on-the-mat activities in uniform

    To be added to the promotion recommendations for the rank of Shichidan:

      Demonstrative moral character and skills such as:

      • Invoking purpose and meaning to what we do
      • Providing higher and personalized motivation and inspiration
      • Regional, national, and international contribution and experiences
      • Developing all students to help achieve higher levels
      • Direct participation in on-the-mat activities in uniform

    To be added to the promotion recommendations for the rank of Hachidan:

      Demonstrative moral character and skills such as:

      • The ability to inspire and organize
      • Recognition for a lifetime of Judo
      • National and international recognition of expertise
      • Being a life coach
      • Being an extraordinary individual

Motion passed

11. Motion: Recommend to the BoE the promotion recommendations for the rank of Rokudan, Shichidan, and Hachidan be accepted. Motion passed

12. Mac Takeda agenda item on foreign Dan promotion to BoE had no support from the promotion committee.

13. Tom Sheehan had two agenda motions to the BoE. First one was on Shodan promotions in dojos. No support from the promotion committee. On second item for requiring all Dan promotions to have Heads up and Safesports. Committee recommended support to passage.

14. Send a letter to the executive director stating agenda items need to be provided sooner so we can discuss items on the agenda at the Yudanshakai level.
