The chances for a medal for the US team at the 2015 World Championships faded dramatically today as reigning Olympic champion Kayla Harrison failed to make it through the preliminary rounds. Harrison, ranked #1 in the world coming into these championships, was defeated in her second match by world # 36 Yoon of South Korea.

It is of note that there were no fewer than 4 current or former world champions in the women’s –78 kg category, none of whom made it to the finals.

The rest of the US team continued to be plagued by the early exits that have characterized the week in Astana (with the exception of Marti Malloy, who took fifth place in the –57 kg division). Katie Sell, Samantha Bleier, Jacob Larsen, and Colton Brown all suffered defeats within their first two matches.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the last day of the individual championships, will see Ajax Tadehara and Andrew Jacobs taking the mat in the men’s –100 kg division, and Akbarzhan Iminov in the +100 kg group. Nina Cutro-Kelly will see action in the women’s +78 kg division.
