I learned about this program from my son’s kindergarten PTA.
If you go to this website:
you can learn about the funding program to benefit youth 18 and under.
Then go to this site to create an account
If your entity is a 501c3, (as is San Shi dojo, under the Japanese
American Cultural Center of Vista), the Kohl’s on-line system should be
able to pull up your non-profit when you register with your
tax i.d. number or ein.
Then, you fill out a very simple one-page application on-line.
The Kohl’s store, which is hopefully located near you (we are lucky,
there is one 1.5mi from the dojo), will post your event in their
employees’ break room. If 5 or more volunteers register and then
work at your event for three consecutive hours, the non-profit is
eligible to receive a $500 grant. I’m just now sending in confirmation
of the payee for the grant.
Our local Kohl’s store said they have gotten into working with the Oceanside
Boys and Girls Club. They worked at the club five times last month,
netting $2,500 for the club in one month! No limit, as of this time, to
number of events in a year. I plan to ask Kohl’s again for their
consideration of our inter-club workout, our next tournament, and anything
else I can think of!
Also, they request 4-6 weeks prior notice of your event. I applied (with
my iPhone, from Hawaii ! ) about 10 days prior, and they still picked
it up. Good for Kohl’s. There is a little back-and-forth over email,
and you may not know if or when the associates will show up until
the day before your event.
I do not detect any ‘strings attached’ to the funding. I hope this
info is helpful! I hope many more judo families can bring these
jita kyoei funds into their activities which benefit youth!
Best regards in the holiday season
San Shi Judo Dojo
At the California Judo, Inc.-Pacific Southwest Judo Association Winter Camp held these past two days, five members of Kohl’s Cares worked in the kitchen with preparing the food for lunch. You can also get $500 grand from Kohl’s.
