Re: SECOND WAVE OF DATA COLLECTION

First of all, I would like to thank you for your interest in participating
in this important study, the purpose of which is to document the positive effects
of judo participation on character development. All of us for years have been
touting the positive benefits to participants of judo. Now, we are actually
testing this scientifically. It is extremely important for us to conduct this
study and document the positive effects of judo so that such evidence can be
used to help create more dojos in the country and spread judo.

We have already had excellent preliminary results, which I have shared with
selected members of the USJF Executive Committee. (Once I have something that
has been accepted for publication, then I can release the general results.)
It is now time to continue the study.

Basically, there are two things we would like to happen:

  1. We would like everyone who has done the survey in the past to do it once
again, even if they are not doing judo. Please remind all your current students
who are still doing judo to go to the website and do it again. Even if your
student no longer does judo, we would really like to get their data. If there
is a way for you to track them down and ask them to help, that would be great.
  2. We would like all others new to the survey to do it for the first time.

Here are some things to remember:

  1. Data collection will begin 1 November and will continue for one month until
    the end of November
  2. All students should receive the Instructions and Implied Consent
    forms.
  3. Have ALL of your students 7th grade and up (including adults, beginners,
advanced, etc.) complete the instruments. There are two ways to collect data:
    1. HARDCOPY. If you requested hardcopies, please provide them with one and ask
them to complete it and bring them back to you. Please collect them and send
them to me all at once at the end of the month.
    2. ONLINE: You can provide your students with the website link to the survey:
http://www.usjf.com/survey. They can complete the survey entirely online. You don't
      have to do anything else.
  4. We are especially interested in NEW STUDENTS TO JUDO to
participate in the study. Please ask them to do so.

At this time, can you let me know that you have received this letter, and whether
you will be referring students to the website or will be wanting hardcopies
to hand out? If the latter, let me know how many we should send to you.

If you have any questions about the survey or procedures, please don’t
hesitate to contact me at

, or my assistant for this project, Stephanie
Hata, at

.

Thanks a lot once again for your help in this important project for judo.
